What Is Z-Wave?

We explain what Z-Wave Is. Z Wave is a low power smart home communication protocol like wifi but uses less power than wifi. Because Z-Wave uses such low power, you can have battery powered smart sensors like those found in security systems. Wifi smart home devices typically require more power and because of this typically can’t be battery powered.

Z-Wave is a standardized mesh communication protocol meaning that devices within the Z-Wave network can be used to repeat the signal of other Z-Wave devices which means that Z-Wave device ranges can be extended by the mesh network.

Another advantage of Z-wave is that because the communication protocol is standardized many Z-Wave devices are compatible with other Z-Wave devices with other manufacturers. However, one downside to Z-Wave devices is that they do require a main hub to connect them to the internet as most don’t directly connect to wifi networks without a hub or bridge.
